BIG CROWD TURNS OUT FOR BENARABY ONE-EIGTH MILE ROUND

The penultimate round of the Queensland Street Car One-Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series has been run and won at Benaraby Raceway near Gladstone, with a good crowd turning out for the event.

Dylan Leo secured the Series lead in Diamond T Products Junior Dragster by virtue of his win. He is now locked on 94 points with Jesse Skinner – who was the Benaraby runner-up.

The skill in one-eighth mile - or 200 metre - drag racing comes from the drivers being able to setup their cars to launch quickly and get the job done in the shorter distance.

One to do that was Gavin List, who was able to take the Final in JP Racing Super Sedan over Neil Grayson. Grayson however moved into the second placing in the JP Racing Super Sedan Series through his runner up position.

Rob Price was another big winner in the John William Car Sales Super Street bracket. He took the win and has opened up an eight point buffer in the Series with a single round to go. He led home David Olsen over the 200 metre distance.

Bob Frawley edged out Andrew Pinkstone in the RD William Excavator Parts Modified bracket – although Athol Jacobson maintains a 12 point lead in that category.

Kevin Cleeve put in a strong performance to knock off Queensland Nameplate Group Modified Bike front runner, Ken Greenough – whilst Laurie Kite was able to lead home Randall Mohr in the FG Loy and Sons Earthmoving Classic bracket.

The round of the Queensland Street Car One-Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series was well supported, with the Gladstone Observer giving over a great deal of coverage in the lead-up to the event, resulting in a strong crowd turning out.

Many of the competitors that were part of the one-eighth mile action across the weekend will be high tailing it south so they can do ‘double the distance’ this weekend – as the Castrol EDGE Winternationals returns to Willowbank Raceway over the 400m, quarter mile.

"We had a good crowd and good competitor numbers" said Series Organiser, John Winterburn. "Although many competitors were preparing for the Castrol EDGE Winternationals and didn't travel north, the big crowd was still treated to some good racing and a good spectacle. The Series pointscores are very tight now heading into the final round at Ironbark Raceway, so it will be interesting to keep an eye on who will come out on top."

The Castrol EDGE Winternationals will resume with a test and tune, along with eliminations for the Rocket All Stars Series and Sportsman racers, beginning Friday afternoon.

Two rounds of ANDRA Pro Series qualifying and eliminations will be held on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

The Queensland Street Car One-Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series will return on September 24, 2011 for it’s final around at Ironbark Raceway.
